Getting started
What age can my child start judo?
We welcome children from as young as 4 years old. Classes are structured according to age and ability to ensure a safe, enjoyable and effective learning experience for every child.
Does my child need any prior experience?
No. Most of our students start with no martial arts background. Our coaches will guide them step by step at a pace suitable for their age and development.
Does my child need to be athletic to start?
Not at all. Judo is suitable for children of all fitness levels and body types. Students develop strength, coordination, flexibility and fitness naturally as part of their training journey.
What should my child bring for the first class?
Comfortable sports attire and a water bottle are sufficient for trial classes. If your child decides to continue, our team will advise on obtaining a judogi (judo uniform).
Safety & development
Is judo safe for children?
Yes. Safety is our top priority. Students are taught proper falling techniques (ukemi) before learning throws, helping them develop body awareness, coordination and confidence while minimising the risk of injury.
How does judo help my child’s development?
Judo teaches valuable life skills such as respect, self-discipline, focus, perseverance, teamwork, responsibility and leadership. These qualities help children succeed not only in sport but also in school, relationships and later in life.
My child lacks confidence. Will judo help?
Through progressive learning, achievable goals and positive coaching, children gain confidence in their abilities. Many parents notice improvements in self-esteem, communication and independence after regular training.
My child spends too much time on screens. Can judo help?
Judo provides a positive and engaging environment that encourages physical activity, social interaction, focus and personal growth. It helps children develop healthy habits and meaningful relationships away from screens.
Can judo help children with discipline and behaviour?
Judo is built on values such as respect, self-control, responsibility and perseverance. Through consistent training and mentorship, many children develop better discipline, focus and emotional control both on and off the mat.
Competition & pathway
Is Merking Judo Club focused on competition?
Competition is available for students who are interested, but it is not our primary focus. We believe judo is a powerful platform for developing character, discipline, resilience and confidence. Every child can benefit from judo regardless of whether they choose to compete.
Are there opportunities to represent Selangor?
Students who demonstrate commitment, skill and competitive potential may have opportunities to participate in local, state and national competitions. Our goal is to help aspiring athletes progress towards representing Selangor and Malaysia. Selection is always subject to the criteria of the relevant competition or governing body.
What makes Merking Judo Club different?
Merking Judo Club is more than a martial arts academy. We focus on developing confident, disciplined and resilient young people while growing the judo community in the Klang Valley. Our mission is to nurture not only better athletes, but also future leaders, professionals and successful individuals in life.
